Palms View International Airport
Palms View Bio
In the 1940s, Palms View was just a small city just south of Daytona Beach. In the 1950s, it started becoming a small tourist attraction which lead to the original Palms View airport "West Gateway", back then known as "West Field" to be converted for civilian use from military use. As that was happening, the southern side of the future PLV airport became a small missile testing range. Mainly for Atlas missiles, this explains why the airplane spotters park has a replica of an Atlas missile in it. Missile operations then fully moved to Cape Canaveral leaving the area vacant. As tourism increased, West Field became more crowded of an airport. The city decided to build a brand new airport called "Palms View International Airport". The city needed an area that was large in space for future expansion and was away from tourist attractions and neighborhoods as to not make people angry. The area used was the old missile range. In 1958, PLV was finished. In the 1960s and 1970s, PLV started getting its first international flights and first hub airlines. These hub airlines were Eastern, Northwest Orient and Pan American. As the city increased and tourism increased, PLV began gettting more and more air traffic. As years went by, the cities population eventually surpassed Jacksonville's population. It is now known as the largest city in the state of Florida. In the 1980s and 1990s, the airport began taking Orlando and Miami's air traffic causing the airport to expand even more.
